If you have spent time on FPV forums or at flying fields recently, you have probably heard about ELRS. ExpressLRS is an open-source radio control link that has become one of the most popular choices for FPV pilots, thanks to its range, low latency and low cost. A control link is the connection between your handheld radio and the receiver on your drone. It carries stick movements, switch positions and telemetry. For years, pilots relied on proprietary systems, but ExpressLRS changed the market by offering high performance on affordable hardware that anyone can update. The main selling points are range and responsiveness. Because ELRS uses efficient LoRa modulation on frequencies such as 2.4 GHz and 868 or 915 MHz, it can maintain a link at long distances with relatively little transmit power. Packet rates can go from low rates designed for range up to 500 Hz or more for racing, so you can choose between maximum distance and a very sharp stick feel. Choosing a frequency band is the first decision. 2.4 GHz is the most common and gives you fast packet rates and small antennas, which suits freestyle and racing. Sub-GHz bands such as 868 MHz in Europe and 915 MHz in the Americas penetrate obstacles better and work well for long-range and mountain flying, although the antennas are longer and the packet rates are lower. Setting up ELRS is simple compared with older systems. You flash matching firmware to your transmitter module and receiver, set a shared binding phrase, and power both on. Most modern radios have built-in ELRS modules, and many flight controllers can accept receivers directly. Always keep the same firmware major version on both ends to avoid binding problems. When you are ready to pick a receiver or choose a drone that already includes ELRS, you can see what is available at FPV drone shop – quality drones and FPV gear and check which models list ELRS support in their specifications. Some larger drones are sold with ELRS and analog video already installed, which saves time during setup. Failsafe settings are essential. Configure your receiver so that if the link is lost, the drone either disarms or follows a return-to-home procedure, depending on your setup. Test the failsafe on the ground with the props removed. Many long-range pilots also add a GPS module so the drone can report its position and return automatically if something goes wrong. A good antenna makes a real difference. Position the receiver antennas away from carbon fiber and noisy electronics, and keep them at a slight angle to one another to improve coverage. On the transmitter side, point the antenna so that its side, not its tip, faces the drone. ExpressLRS does not remove the need for common sense, but it gives pilots a reliable, affordable link and a community that updates and improves it constantly.
